Cold wave warning: IMD alerts Northern States, advises checking forecast

IMD issues cold wave alert for Northern States next week: residents urged to monitor weather forecast

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted a drop in night and day temperatures in northern states of India between January 5 and 11, leading to the possibility of cold wave conditions. Dr Mrutynjay Mohapatra, the Director General of IMD, stated that central India, including Madhya Pradesh, northern parts of Maharashtra, southern parts of Uttar Pradesh, and areas in Haryana and Rajasthan, may experience cold wave conditions during this period.

Low-Pressure area over Southeast Arabian Sea

In addition to the temperature dip, Mohapatra mentioned the formation of a low-pressure area over the southeast Arabian Sea, resulting in cloud cover over regions in Lakshadweep and the Maldives Islands.

The IMD anticipates heavy rainfall in Lakshadweep over the next three days, accompanied by strong winds reaching speeds of 40-50 kmph. Fishermen have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea during this period.

Monthly weather outlook and annual summary

During a press conference, Mohapatra presented the monthly forecast for January, predicting normal rainfall throughout January-February-March. Reflecting on 2023, he noted it as the second warmest year since 1901, with a mean air temperature 0.65 degrees Celsius above normal. The warmest year on record was 2016.

Mohapatra highlighted that while most parts of the country are expected to experience warmer mornings, central and northwestern regions may have cooler days. South peninsular and northeastern India, on the other hand, are expected to witness warmer days with above-normal monthly maximum temperatures in January.
